“After high school I enlisted in the Air Force. Initially I went in to be a bomb technician, but after a change of heart, I was placed in the Security Forces career field where I spent my entire enlistment at Minot AFB, North Dakota. Once my enlistment was over I re-joined the civilian world and I found myself employed in the casino industry working first in surveillance and then eventually in table games. It was while working in surveillance that I met my wife Heather, and now we have 2 little girls together with a 3rd girl on the way! I’ve also completed an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration.”
Q: Why did you decide to come to Centriq?
A: Working for a casino definitely had its pros and cons. Although it had its fun moments I came to find the work repetitive and not very satisfying. Additionally, the late nights were putting a strain on my family. I had always been the “computer guy” wherever I worked, and I knew that the opportunities in the IT field were abundant, and so I decided to do some research. A good friend of mine graduated from Centriq and he was earning great money with good hours. He had nothing but great things to say about his time at Centriq. The real icing on the cake, however, was that my military G.I. Bill benefits covered my tuition expenses. By the time I had worked this all out, I had made up my mind that this was definitely the career field for me. There was no way I was going to pass up this opportunity!
Q: What class has been your favorite so far?
A: This is a tough question to answer, but so far the most fun I’ve had was in A+. Getting my hands on the computers and taking them apart has always been something I enjoyed, and it was incredibly satisfying to turn that old hobby of mine into a certification. It will be even more satisfying when I turn it into a career! The most interesting thing that I’ve learned, however, has been everything that Active Directory is capable of. All of these years I had been working in these domain environments and I had no idea how any of that was accomplished! I think most users have no idea the detailed level of control that an administrator has over his domain. I know I sure didn’t. It’s definitely an eye opener.
Q: What do you hope to do after Centriq?
A: I earned my degree in Public Administration in hopes of getting a job where I can help to improve people’s lives. I’m looking forward to working in an exciting field where I can be challenged while still making a difference. I’ve done the simple, assembly line style jobs, and I am definitely looking for something more dynamic where I can apply my problem solving and critical thinking skills. Additionally, one of my passions is helping others to learn new things. I get a lot of personal satisfaction out of teaching and so one day I aspire to be a company IT trainer or perhaps even one day teach IT once I’ve gleaned enough experience in the field.
Q: What other interests do you have?
A: Once upon a time I called myself a computer gamer, but these days I spend the majority of my spare time with my wife and children. I love teaching my daughters new things and helping them understand how the world around us works. When I find time for myself I enjoy learning new things on the internet about science and other academic topics that capture my interest in the moment.
