How to Become a Web Developer – Centriq

Ever thought about being a web developer? These roles hold the fun and important responsibility of designing and building websites. Web Developers are in charge of not only how a website appears but of the technical aspects that keep it running. Curious to learn more about what they do and how to become one? We share all the details of becoming a web developer.

What Does a Web Developer Do?

These specialized roles are known for being the experts in website development and design. Throughout the day, a web developer will work alongside the team to develop and design webpages for their company. They have solid knowledge of coding languages like JavaScript, HTML, CSS, etc., and are capable of maintaining and updating pages as needed.

What Skills Do You Need to Be a Web Developer?

Web developers need to have experience with programming. This knowledge can be obtained in many ways, from getting a college degree to enrolling in a technical program. Key skills to pick up include understanding a variety of coding languages and technical terminology.

Once the basics are covered, you can decide to branch off to a specific developer role. A few options are back-end development, front-end development, and full-stack development. Some roles focus on the structure and code of websites whereas others will work on the visual appearance of the site.

Web Developer Salary

Salary-wise, web developers are seeing their average compensation start around $70,000 annually. These salary estimates are based on several factors such as the experience a person has, where they are located, and what company they work for. Like all roles, it’s always a good idea to continue to build experiences and familiarize yourself with new advancements and technology in order to stay competitive in your field.

Web Developer Interview Questions

The interviews you encounter during your job search are meant to assess technical skills as well as your ability to solve problems. You may be asked about your previous experience and your familiarity with different coding languages. It’s also a good idea to have a portfolio of past work ready to share as some companies will ask to see this to gauge your background.

Like with any interview, we recommend doing specific company-based research to learn more about who the company is, who their customers are, and how your skills can fill their needs.

Web Developer Resume

A well-rounded resume will include hard and soft skills that show the employer that you’re well qualified for the role.

When it comes to hard skills that are beneficial to include on a resume, you’ll want to include any programming, coding, and website development. It’s useful to include skills like JavaScript, Python, HTML, technical SEO, and design principles.

Soft skills that you can include should relate to workplace skills that show why you’d make a good member of the team. For example, communication, organization, and problem-solving are all important to being a web developer.

Web Developer Jobs

The IT world is filled with all kinds of roles. When it comes to web developers, there are a variety of options out there. All companies need some sort of expert that handles their website. If you’re in a smaller one, you may do everything on the front and backend. If you end up at a larger company, the overall maintenance of the site could be split among multiple developers.
