Centriq’s IT Career Program grads work for some really great companies. We asked Cary Shiner, COO at Technology Group Solutions (TGS), to tell us about his company and why they hire Centriq grads.
- Would you give us a little background on TGS?
TGS has provided IT technology and services to the Midwest region since 2005. As a platinum partner to many of the major technology providers, we focus in the data center for large organizations and provide full IT managed services for smaller companies. TGS has over 50 employees in the Kansas City area and just recently launched Kansas City’s first Technology Center showcasing the latest technologies.
- Tell us about your IT staff and the services they provide.
TGS employs around 30 IT professionals. We have 3 focused areas:
Consulting – These IT professionals have years of proven experience in the field and deal with the most complex situations in any size organization. Our focus is in the data center infrastructure (network, security, server and storage).
Helpdesk – we operate a 3-tier helpdesk. Many are hired straight out of school. We provide full IT services including (IT, Phone, Audio/Visual and Cabling)
Data Center Architects – TGS employs a team of proven experts in data center planning, architecture and cabling sub-structure. These individuals work in all types of situations from enterprise data centers to new office construction.
- What’s the coolest thing about TGS?
We just opened Kansas City’s first IT Technology Center featuring the latest technologies from HPE, Dell, VMware, Elastic Search, Cisco and more! We get to play with all the fun stuff.
- How many Centriq grads have you hired?
TGS has been hiring Centriq graduates since 2005. We have hired over 10 graduates.
- What technologies will our Centriq grads have an opportunity to work with at your company?
TGS works on every variant of technology, new and old. We are constantly onboarding organizations that have neglected their IT and require significant investment and transformation. Our technicians get to see it all – the good, the bad and the ugly.
- What do you like most about Centriq grads?
Centriq produces a quality and well educated technician. What is more important though is Centriq’s pursuit of building the communications, presentation, and soft skills of the person. This is often over looked. We have been very pleased with the investment Centriq makes into the student as a whole.
- What is your favorite way to hire Centriq grads?
We use 3 ways primarily:

- Student Project Presentations – these are awesome!
