Q: Why did you decide to come to Centriq?
A: I was in a job that I really didn't feel challenged with. I needed to use my mind and skills in a more fulfilling way. I found out about Centriq from a friend, who had a relative go through the IT track. I made an appointment, got tested and had both tracks to choose from. I chose the developer track, because I have used so many programs (poorly designed!) and seen a number of really poor websites. Now I can use my training to develop programs that are easier to use.
Q: What class has been your favorite so far?
A: I enjoyed all of the tracks, because they were something new for me. I would say that I felt most comfortable with the Fundamentals of Relational Data Design. Years ago I did some work with Visual Basic for Applications to create reporting tools to make my job easier.
Q: What do you hope to do after Centriq?
A: I really want to put what I’ve learned at Centriq to good use. Working as a programmer for a few years to really be able to know and use these skills with ease. Ultimately, I would like to train people on the subject. I have training in my background, and I really like the program here. Who knows, I might make it back here someday?
Q: What other interests do you have?
A: I love to cook, not a great skill to have when you need to lose a few pounds. I’m also a competitive BBQer. My best friend and I won Grand Champion this past August in a cookoff in Independence. I’ve competed in the American Royal and have been onstage at Memphis-In-May and also competed in some not so famous national events. If you look at my website you’ll be able to see where I came up with my website name, www.smokincode.com. I’ve been known to bring some samples in for my classmates to try, so if you smell BBQ in the air some night, I might just be the culprit!
